Bogle Beats the Buzzer, Severt Notches No. 1,000 in Victory

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With the Athenas trailing the Middlebury Panthers 53-52 with under five seconds remaining, Corinne Bogle (CMC) drove down the lane with her right hand. She was bumped, but managed to lift a shot from just outside the key that found the bottom of the cup and gave the Athenas the lead with one second on the clock.

A last second heave by the Panthers was off the mark and CMS claimed a thrilling 54-53 victory over Middlebury on Friday night. The last second bucket accounted for two of Bogle's game-high 19 points on the night and capped off a fourth-quarter that saw CMS outscore the Panthers 15-8.

Earlier in the game, Kailee Severt (CMC) made a layup at the end of the first quarter to register her 1,000th career point. Severt finished the game with 12 points and currently has 1,007 career points. She is less than 50 points away from cracking into the program's top-10 scoring leaders.

Heading into the final quarter, CMS trailed 45-39 but the Athenas held Middlebury to just two points for the first 7:40 of the final stanza. The strong defensive effort allowed CMS to take a 52-47 lead with 1:20 remaining in the game. Scoring was spread out in the final period for CMS. Five different players collected points in the quarter, but none scored more than four.

With CMS leading by five, Middlebury flipped the script in the final 90 seconds of regulation. The Panthers knocked down a three to pull within two and with 23 seconds left in the game, Alex Huffman made a layup to tie the game at 52-52.

After a missed jumper and put back attempt by the Athenas, Middlebury had the ball with 15 seconds left with a chance for the final shot. Catherine Harrison drove for the go-ahead bucket and was fouled on the attempt. Harrison went 1-2 from the line to give the Panthers a 53-52 lead.

Following a timeout, it was CMS' turn to try for the victory. With just five seconds on the clock, Bogle drove down the right-side of the key and got a shot off as she was falling to the floor. The attempt found the bottom of the cup to give CMS the lead at 54-53 with exactly one second remaining on the clock. A final heave from the Panthers went bidding and the Athenas escaped with 54-53 victory.

CMS had built a 17-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter, but a strong second quarter for Middlebury put the visitors up 32-29 at the half. A relatively slow third quarter allowed the Panthers to expand their lead to six points and set the table for an exciting fourth-quarter comeback for the Athenas.

CMS moves to 8-2 with the victory and will next take the court on Sunday when they host Webster at 1:00 p.m. to wrap up the 2017 slate.
