Brackmann nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year award

INDIANAPOLIS – Following a decorated career at Claremont McKenna College as a member of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team, Kris Brackmann '17 has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

During her time in Claremont, Brackmann immersed herself in the Division III student-athlete experience as is evident by the abbreviated list of her activities to follow. She helped lead the Athenas to four-straight conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, participated on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and became its president as a senior, wrote for the student newspaper, broadcasted CMS sporting events, served as the co-president of the Student Art Council, and organized a talk at the Athenaeum titled "Locker Room Talk: Combating Homophobia."

On the court as a senior, Brackmann averaged 11.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, two steals and 1.7 assists, and made first team All-SCIAC.

All told, a record 543 female college athletes were nominated by NCAA member schools from all divisions for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Brackmann is one of 197 individuals nominated from Division III programs, and one of 78 women's basketball players.

Next, conferences will select up to two conference nominees each from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will then choose the top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

From the top 30, the selection committee determines the top three honorees from each division and announces the nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then chooses the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine.

The top 30 honorees will be recognized and the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced at the annual award ceremony Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.
