Rebounds galore in road game vs. La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team (15-8, 11-3) completed the season sweep of La Verne (2-20, 2-11) with the 65-50 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Athenas proved to be the better team in the game, shooting almost 50 percent from the field and a rebound margin of plus-19 in the game.

After a slow start for both teams, senior post Claire Donnelly (CMC) kick started an 11 point run for CMS in the first quarter. The Leopards did not net their first basket until the 1:58 mark in the quarter. During that time, senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) came down with nine boards, including four on offense. The tenacious forward distributed the ball well, too, making two assists in the first period.

Halfway through the second quarter, Noelle Cobb led the charge for ULV as they mustered a rally. The Leos came within six points of the Athenas as they hit back-to-back 3-pointers by Karli Kato and Faye Osburn. CMS quickly responded with a pair of layups by sophomore Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) and senior Aly Young (CMC). The Athenas were successful driving to the hoop all game and ultimately scored 44 of their 65 points in the paint.

After the break, the Athenas returned with resolve to demonstrate their dominance. CMS scored 35 points in the second half to earn the 15-point victory and season sweep of ULV.

Senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) began her scoring for the quarter with a pair of three throws. She leads the team and the conference with a 91.8 percent success rate from the line. She then closed out the quarter with three consecutive baskets to total eight points in the period. Donnelly kept the Leopards at bay with a trio of weakside blocks and added five boards to her growing total.

Glosniak scored more than half of her points in the final quarter, going 3-for-3 from the field to lead the team. Donnelly and Glosniak combined for almost half of the team's total boards as CMS out-rebounded the Leopards 48-29.

Brackmann scored 17 while Young put in 10 points and Glosniak recorded a double-double. ULV's Cobb was good for 16 points, but the Athenas kept the rest of the Leopards in single digits.

CMS (15-8, 11-3) returns to Roberts Pavilion on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to face SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran (14-7, 10-2). The Regals have won three in a row and sit in second place in the standings, just above the Athenas.
