Athenas rebound with blowout victory over Poets

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team (14-8, 10-3) kept the glass clean in its 61-48 victory over Whittier (6-15, 5-7) on Wednesday night, collecting 20 offensive rebounds as a team and scoring 16 second chance points. The Athenas dominated in the paint and outworked the Poets 46-29 in the rebounding category. Senior Claire Donnelly (CMC) led the team with 10 rebounds and two blocks while her classmate Kris Brackmann (CMC) scored 17 points and grabbed eight boards. Cali Cubel led the Poets with 12 points while her teammate Ana Youngblood had 10, but Whittier did not have the offensive punch to keep up that night.

Junior Kailee Severt (CMC) got the first quarter started with a difficult layup in traffic and Brackmann followed with a guarded layup for the and-one and made the free throw. Leading 7-5, the Athenas went on an 8-0 run capped off by a jumper from freshman Maya Love (CMC). The Poets responded with a 9-0 run to cut the Athenas' lead to one, but sophomore Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) stopped the bleeding with a cutting layup to finish the quarter.

Koelker-Wolfe continued where she left off, hitting a 3-pointer at the start of the second quarter. Donnelly managed to outwork her defender in the post for a layup and later Brackmann found senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) in the paint for another easy basket to cap the 7-0 run. Brackmann closed the half with two 3-pointers to extend the Athenas' lead 32-19.

The Athenas refused to let the Poets back in the game and opened up the third quarter with another huge run. Senior Jai Dungca (CMC) gathered her feet and launched a 3-pointer to start off the second half. She then found Glosniak with a nifty pass and the forward went up strong amidst contact for an and-one layup. She made her free throw. After Carly Buechler hit a 3-pointer for Whittier, CMS responded with a 7-0 run to extend its lead 45-22.

Whittier tried to pull a run during the fourth quarter, scoring seven straight points over a two minute period, but it was not enough to close the gap as the Athenas maintained their offensive rhythm.

CMS will head to La Verne on Saturday, Feb. 11 in hopes of climbing up in the SCIAC. The Athenas won their last meeting with the Leopards 69-46 back on Jan. 25.
