CMS seniors go 8-0 against Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team retains control of Sixth Street for the fourth year in a row with the 46-35 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night. The Athenas got off to a hot start and then held onto a lead down the stretch when the Sagehens challenged. CMS sits in first place in the SCIAC standings at 8-2 with eight games left on the schedule.

CMS took a quick lead, earning the first nine points of the game, seven coming from senior Kris Brackmann (CMC). Seconds after the tip, Brackmann put in a layup and then converted a steal on the subsequent possession into three points. The CMS defense kept PP from scoring for the first five minutes of play.

Going into the second period, the Athenas had the 14-5 advantage. Senior Aly Young (CMC) got CMS going with a layup on the Athenas' first possession, deftly assisted by classmate Quinn Glosniak (CMC). Near the end of the shot clock after the media timeout, Brackmann drove into the lane for a right-handed layup. Brackmann would end up with nine points in the first half.

PP then went on a five point run bringing them within four at 18-4. Senior Alaina Woo capped off the run with an unassisted 3-pointer.

Junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) answered with a jumper in traffic just outside the paint and then a spinning Severt brought the Athenas' lead back up to 22-14 with a layup through a flock of Sagehens. Bogle ended up with the second-highest point total at 10 on the night in 20 minutes of work. "Corinne really hustled tonight and brought great energy," said head coach Kristen Dowling of Bogle after the game.

Coming back from the break, CMS held just the nine point lead of 24-15. Senior post Claire Donnelly (CMC) made the first three points of the second half for CMS with a free throw and then a turnaround layup in the paint. The third quarter was a low scoring affair as both teams were in single digits. Freshman Gloria Bates (CMC) and sophomore Kiki Yang (CMC) came in to provide key defensive minutes in the period.

The fourth quarter saw the Sagehens attempt to claw their way back into the game but CMS maintained a consistent lead and finished it off with a pair of free throws by senior Jai Dungca (CMC).

In catching up with Brackmann after the game, she noted "It's a great feeling to be able to look back at the last four years of being on the winning side this rivalry. They are always close games and I'm so proud of this team to fight for each of these wins."

Next up for the CMS (12-7, 8-2) are games against Caltech (3-16, 1-9) and Redlands (9-9, 6-3) next week on Feb. 1 and 4.
