Team defense and points in the paint give Athenas edge vs. Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – Three players on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team were in double-digit scoring in last night's 59-43 victory over Redlands. The Athenas were successful inside against the Bulldogs (4-7, 1-1), scoring 34 of their 49 points from the field in the paint. With the win, CMS improves to 3-1 in conference play, gearing up for a dense month of SCIAC competition.

Head coach Kristen Dowling was complimentary of the posts' relentless play under the hoop. Senior Claire Donnelly (CMC) led the team with 12 points including 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Junior Kailee Severt (CMC) went 5-for-9 from the field, putting up three of those baskets in the second quarter. Off the bench, freshmen Maya Love (CMC) and Lindsey Cleary (CMC) combined for over 40 minutes and six points.

Defensively, the Athenas held Redlands to a mere nine points in each of the first three quarters and just 28 percent shooting for the complete game. Reyna Ta'amu and Jade Cheldelin, the Bulldog's leading scorers, were capped at eight points apiece thanks to the hard-nosed team defense by CMS.

Sophomore Kiki Yang (CMC) earned her second career start as the team's point guard while junior Kylie Au (CMC) came off the bench and contributed 20 solid minutes and six points. In addition to Donnelly and Severt in double-figures, senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) notched her fifth game this season with at least ten points.

CMS (7-5, 3-1) hosts Caltech (2-10, 0-3) in a double header with the men's team this Saturday, Jan. 7 starting at 5 p.m.
