Donnelly's double-double helps Athenas take Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team maintained a win streak with the 59-43 victory over Whittier College on the final day of 2016. The Athenas were led by junior Kailee Severt (CMC) and senior Claire Donnelly (CMC) while they out-scored the Poets in three of four quarters.

Severt put up 16 points, predominantly in the first quarter when she was 3-for-3 including a three-pointer. Donnelly was responsible for 10 points as CMS scored 22 in the paint. The senior center recorded her first double-double of the season and was on the floor for 34 minutes in the Athenas' win.

CMS took the 15-10 lead in the first quarter, aided by three blocks from Donnelly, and then almost doubled the Poets' scoring in the second to go up 32-19 at the half.

The third quarter was the only period Whittier out-scored CMS, led by Emily Underwood and Carly Buechler who were both perfect from the field and hot from beyond the arc.

Off the bench, freshman Maya Love (CMC) was good for nine points for the Athenas, five rebounds and a block. All said, CMS had eight blocks in the game, the second highest total this season.

CMS once again held Whittier to single digits in the fourth quarter as the Poets put the Athenas on the line. Donnelly, Severt, freshman Gloria Bates (CMC) and junior Kylie Au (SC) took the foul shots for CMS and were 12-for-15 in the final quarter alone.

CMS has now won two games in a row and improves to 2-1 in conference play, 6-5 overall.

Next up for CMS (6-5, 2-1) is another SCIAC matchup, this time traveling to Redlands (4-6, 1-0) on Jan. 4.
