Last second layup for Tigers to beat Athenas

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In the second conference game of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team came up short to Occidental College 52-51. The game saw five lead changes with neither team leading by more than six points.

The first quarter had each team scoring 14 points. Senior Claire Donnelly (CMC) was the first to get on the board for CMS after the Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. The Athenas tied it up at 10-10 with a layup by senior Aly Young (CMC) who went on put in 11 points on the night.

Donnelly and Young continued to score in the paint for CMS, combining for nine of the team's 14 points in the second quarter. For the second period in a row, junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) was 2-for-2 from the line and had amassed three steals going into halftime.

For Occidental, Triana Anderson was already 8-for-9 from the field plus three rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Tigers were still effective against the Athenas, despite using just eight players in the game.

Coming back from the break, CMS recorded just three turnovers in the third quarter but were successful on just four of 14 baskets. Senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) nabbed three boards in the period.

CMS was up by as much as four points midway through the final quarter when freshman Maya Love (CMC) went on a six-point run herself, assisted by Donnelly at the 5:44 mark as CMS led 45-41. CMS maintained a three-point lead with a driving layup by senior Jai Dungca (CMC) with 1:40 on the clock. The teams traded baskets and then Oxy came within one point on a pair of free throws by Anderson. After the foul shots, Dru Ishibashi grabbed a steal and dished it to Anderson for a game-winning layup. The Anderson ended up with 22 points in the Tigers' 52-51 victory over CMS.

The Athenas  (4-4, 1-1) next play next Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. vs. Biola.
