Full team effort in Sixth Street victory

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first installation of the Sixth Street Rivalry for the 2016-17 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas came away with the 75-32 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Sixteen different CMS players put up points in the game that amounted to the 43-point victory.

The first quarter was kick-started by senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) with a layup on the Athenas' third possession. Six points later, the Sagehens still had not made their first basket while senior Aly Young (CMC) made two layups on back-to-back plays.

Pomona-Pitzer's Zoe Hunt scored their first, and only, points of the quarter with just 2:38 left in the period. The Athenas out-rebounded PP 18-6 in the quarter, led by Glosniak and freshman Maya Love (CMC) at five apiece. Late in the period, senior Claire Donnelly (CMC) made a layup in traffic but was fouled while making the play, forcing her to the line. Donnelly made her extra basket for the 15-2 lead going into the second quarter.

CMS poured in 20 points in the second quarter, led by Young in the paint. The post was 3-for-4 in the quarter for six points in just five minutes of play. Sophomore Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) hit her third 3-pointer of the season a 2:14 remaining in the half, assisted by Glosniak. Pomona-Pitzer put in baskets on consecutive possessions to finish out the quarter, but the Athenas held a mighty 35-16 lead.

The Sagehens' Hunt returned from halftime in significant foul trouble, but still played seven minutes of the second half.  

In the second half, Glosniak again was the first to score, this time from beyond the arc, assisted by senior Kris Brackmann (CMC). Brackmann led the team in assists on the night with four to her name.

In the final period, all 12 members of the Athena bench saw time on the floor as almost everyone contributed a basket. The rookies were led by Love who scored six in the quarter, ending up with eight in the game. Two upperclassmen hit big threes that excited the crowd: senior Shaina Van Stryk (SC) and junior Michelle Lanterman (HMC).

The game wrapped up with the Athenas not only winning by points, but also in having fewer turnovers. Young lead all players with 14 points going 7-for-10 from the field without recording a foul.  Glosniak, Donnelly and Love each had eight rebounds as the team recorded an astounding 10 blocks.

For Pomona-Pitzer, Aliana Woo led with 12 points while center Anita Romero was in double-digits on boards with 11.

Next up for CMS will be a test from NAIA's Westmont on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion.
