Big fourth quarter gives Athenas win vs. UCSC

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team wrapped up the 2016 David Wells Classic with another win, this time 76-51 over UC Santa Cruz. After a tight first half, the Athenas scored 45 points in the second to come away with the well-deserved victory.

In the first half, junior Kailee Severt (CMC) put up 12 points on her way to 21 in the game. She hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter to contribute the Athenas' 19-11 lead after a jumper by junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) to finish the first quarter.

Then, the Banana Slugs came roaring back in the second quarter, out-scoring CMS 17-12. The Athenas committed a number of fouls in the quarter that put UC Santa Cruz shooters on the line. UCSC was a perfect 11-for-11 on free throws in the first half, led by Jenna Sparks and Michelle Poole, each making four. The Banana Slugs first took a lead at 26-25 after Jasmin Dimson made an and-one foul shot which forced CMS to take a timeout at 1:32. The Athenas closed out the half with two buckets in the paint by Severt to take the 31-28 lead.

The Athenas took better care of the basketball in the second half with just two turnovers in each quarter while the defense limited the Slugs to just six points in the third.

CMS did not allow UCSC to make a basket for the first three and half minutes of the third quarter. During that time, the Athenas put up 10 points. In three consecutive possessions, CMS hit a trio of 3-pointers. Severt added her third of the game while senior Jai Dungca (CMC) and sophomore Kiki Yang (CMC) each hit their first. Senior Kris Brackmann grabbed five rebounds and added an assist and a steal in the quarter.

The Athenas' 26-point fourth quarter cemented the victory as the team shot 73 percent from the field. Brackmann was an impressive 3-for-3 from the field plus a free throw. She made all five of her points in less than a minute of clock time between 7:22 and 6:27. Sophomore Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) played seven minutes and led the team with three rebounds. The last two baskets of the game were by Koelker-Wolfe with an athletic underneath layup and freshman Maya Love's (CMC) first 3-pointer of the season.

Ultimately, three of the CMS starters were in double-digit points and senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) led with eight boards.

The Athenas next take the court against cross-street rivals, Pomona-Pitzer (0-5), on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
