Defense takes Athenas past Carleton

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team limited Carleton College to just two points in the third quarter en route to the 65-37 victory on the first day of the 2016 David Wells Classic. The Athenas out-rebounded the Knights 41 to 30 and put up more than half of their points in the paint.

Eleven CMS players contributed points last night led by senior center Claire Donnelly (CMC) at 13. Donnelly got the Athenas going in the first quarter to start the game with a 9-0 run, shutting out the Knights for the first six minutes of the game. Sophomore Kiki Yang (CMC) and senior Aly Young (CMC) contributed productive minutes on the floor as Young put in two baskets and nabbed a steal. Senior Jai Dungca (CMC) finished up the quarter with a driving layup in the final seconds.

Carleton's Maddie Talamantes was perfect from the field and scored half of the team's buckets in the quarter. Ultimately, she was the second highest scorer for the Knights at seven points after being heavily guarded by the Athenas.

Each of the eight baskets that were made in the second quarter was made by different Athenas. Going into halftime, CMS held the 34-24 advantage.

Once again, when CMS came back from the break, Donnelly put in two quick jumpers split up by senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) adding one of her own to stretch out the Athenas' lead to 16 points. After the lone Knights' basket, CMS finished with nine points straight as senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) led with four rebounds.

The CMS bench played the majority of the fourth quarter as freshman Lindsey Cleary (CMC) led all players with four points, hitting both of her free throws. The non-starters eventually put up 31 of the team's points on the night.

The Athenas are now 2-2 on the season and face UC Santa Cruz in just a few hours to wrap up this year's Wells Classic. Yesterday, the Banana Slugs beat Pomona-Pitzer 85-55. Today, CMS faces them at 3 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion.
