Strong finish for CMS vs. No. 8 WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A good night's rest seemed to make the difference for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team, who rallied, but ultimately lost 66-49 to No. 8 Washington University, St. Louis on Saturday evening. After Chicago's defense stifled the Athenas the day before, CMS finished strong against the McWilliams Tournament host in the final game of the road trip.

WashU's offense was undeniably successful through the first half as Natalie Orr was 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the half, knocking down 11 points. Senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) countered with a pair of triples herself in the opening quarter and led the team with eight points in the first half.

The halftime score of 41-17 seemed like too much of a deficit for the Athenas to rally back from, but they kept fighting and out-scored the Bears 32-25 in the second half.

Senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) played all 10 minutes of the third quarter and contributed five points and two rebounds. CMS had nine opportunities from the free throw line in the third quarter alone and made six. Brackmann and sophomore Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) each went 2-for-2 as the Athenas continued with their tradition of consistency from the free throw line.

A handful of freshmen showed their mettle in the fourth as Maya Love (CMC) tallied two baskets plus an and-one. Lindsey Cleary (CMC) combined with Gloria Bates (CMC) and Love for the final basket for CMS in the game. Bates grabbed a steal and then Love dished the ball to Cleary in the paint for an all-freshman play.

Three Athenas recorded eight points on the night – Brackmann, Glosniak and Koelker-Wolfe – and Love led all players with seven rebounds. With 28 minutes played against the Bears on Saturday, Brackmann was named as the CMS representative on the All-Tournament team.

CMS returns to campus for a quick Thanksgiving break before hosting the Annual David Wells Classic Nov. 25-26. In the upcoming tournament, the Athenas face Carleton from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and their independent neighbors to the north, UC Santa Cruz.
