Young dominates second half as Athenas down Beavers

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In one of her strongest games of the season, junior center Alyson Young (CMC) posted 17 points and a season-high 12 rebounds as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team beat Caltech 67-47.

The Beavers kept things tight in the first quarter but junior guard Jai Dungca (CMC) connected on a three pointer with three seconds left to break an 11-all deadlock.

Dungca and junior forward Kris Brackmann (CMC) combined for 11 points in the second and the Athenas turned a 23-18 lead into a comfortable 31-18 mark at the half.

The third quarter was where Young began to take over as she extended the CMS lead to 23 at the buzzer. Freshman forward Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) made her presence felt on the court as well as she collected three assists in the frame.

To help wrap up the game, Young accounted for the Athenas' first nine points of the fourth quarter and freshman guard Kiki Yang (CMC) drilled a three to end the scoring and seal a 67-47 win.

Young shot 66% on the night and was a big part of the Athenas notching their second highest offensive rebound total of the season.

Dunga and Brackmann also posted solid performances with double digit point totals and two assists each.

Kate Lewis matched Young's 17 point performance for the Beavers and led all Caltech players in rebounds with nine.

Still perfect in the SCIAC (10-0), the Athenas sit comfortable in first place and will next take on Whittier at home on Feb. 2.
