CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team increased their win streak to nine games with the 68-58 victory over cross-campus rivals Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday night in the Rains Center. CMS out-scored the Sagehens 22-10 in the second quarter to take a commanding 12 point lead going into halftime. They then maintained the lead for an eventual 10 point win.
The game was initially back-and-forth until Anya Quig for PP tied up the game at 14-14 for the last basket in the quarter.
The star of the second quarter was Kayalin Akens-Irby (CMC) who scored three baskets in a row, the first to tie up the game and then to go ahead 20-16.
On back-to-back possessions, junior Jai Dungca (CMC) found Kris Brackmann (CMC) and then Mara Falahee (SCR) under the basket for a quick layups to give the Athenas the 28-21 advantage.
At halftime, Kailee Severt (CMC) led all players with 10 points including two-three pointers and a pair of free throws.
Brackmann got the Athenas going in the third quarter with a three in the corner to up CMS' lead to 15 points.
The fourth quarter started with Dungca hitting a three of her own, assisted by Severt.
Pomona-Pitzer countered with a three pointer by Alaina Woo. Woo would be 4-for-8 from behind the arc in the game and the Sagehens' co-leading scorer at 18 points. Basha Brulee-Wills also scored 18 for the Hens going 6-for-11 from the field.
Akens-Irby poured in four more points in the fourth quarter while Falahee played relentless defense, often ending up on the hardwood in an attempt for a rebound.
Dungca made one of two free throws to finish off the game for the 68-58 win. Severt and Akens-Irby each ended up with 12 points while Dungca wrapped up with 11. Falahee amassed 14 boards, tying her highest mark of the season.
The Athenas (14-4, 9-0 SCIAC) next host Caltech (2-15, 0-8 SCIAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. after the men's game in the Rains Center.
