Gutsy overtime win over Chapman to be 6-0 in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Chapman women's basketball teams sent the Saturday night SCIAC match up into overtime with CMS ultimately coming out on top 50-44. In the low-scoring affair, the Athenas won the rebounding battle and had offensive contributions from all over the floor.

After the Athenas had as large as a 12 point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Chapman fought back by out-scoring CMS 16-6 in the quarter. CMS first took the lead on an Alyson Young (CMC) layup in the first quarter to go up 9-8. They maintained it until the Panthers knotted up the game at 40 points late in the game. Lauren Sato for CU drained a pair of free throws to give Chapman their first lead in 31 minutes of clock time. With the game on the line, senior Mara Falahee (SCR) was awarded free throws. Falahee recorded her only point on the night by making the second of two, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Athenas were perfect from the foul line and scored eight points to Chapman's two in order to secure the win. Junior Jai Dungca (CMC) made two baskets from the field to cap off another double-digit night for the point guard.

Falahee ended up with 10 boards on the night, significantly contributing to the team's 41 and landing her third in SCIAC for rebounds per game. Young and Kris Brackmann (CMC) each had nine and seven boards, just behind Falahee. The Athenas' defense tops the conference in points allowed at a mere 45.0. Even including tonight's game, Chapman averages 69.2 points in conference games. Overall, CMS' defense allows 51.5, earning the Athenas a spot in the top 25 in the nation for points allowed.

Junior center Claire Donnelly (CMC) blocked three shots on the night, bringing her total up to 17 on the season.

For Chapman, Megan Charles ended up as the leading scorer with 11 points in 37 minutes of play.

The Athenas maintain an undefeated record in SCIAC play, improving to 6-0 after tonight's win. Overall CMS is 11-4. Next, the Athenas host Redlands (6-8, 3-2 SCIAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Linde Activities Center.
