Stifling defense holds Oxy to 37 points in SCIAC win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team held Occidental College (4-8, 0-3 SCIAC) scoreless through the first ten minutes of play in the SCIAC game on Tuesday night before the Athenas went on to run away with the win, 62-37.

The game was solidly in the Athenas' hands as they took a commanding 12-0 lead to start off the game. The largest lead for CMS was 30 points midway through the fourth quarter.

The defense won the rebound battle 43-26 as senior forward Mara Falahee (SCR) snagged 12 boards. In the last two games, Falahee has totaled 26 rebounds.

In addition to the team's success on the boards, the Athenas were 16-for-17 from the free throw line for 94%, the highest percentage since Dec. 8, 2014 when they were 3-for-3 against Caltech. Sophomore Kailee Severt (CMC) was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line.

Junior Kris Brackmann (CMC) drained two-three pointers, both assisted by junior Jai Dungca (CMC), the CMS Student-Athlete of the Week. Brackmann and Severt each contributed 14 points on the night.

For Oxy, Paige Waters was in double-digits with 11 points on the night plus two steals.

CMS (8-4, 3-0 SCIAC) travels to Whittier (4-7, 1-1 SCIAC) on Saturday, Jan. 9 for a double header against the Poets.
