Dungca lifts Athenas to victory over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior guard Jai Dungca (CMC) put up a career-high 26 points in 36 minutes of play in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball game against the University of La Verne. After leading by just one point at halftime, CMS ultimately earned the 71-59 win.

The teams traded three pointers in the first two possessions of the game, indicating an ensuing battle. ULV had the lead for a chunk of the first period until breaking the 11-11 tie with a jumper by Shannon Irwin. Irwin went on to score 12 points for a three-way tie for the Leos' points leader. Joining her were Noelle Cobb and Emily Myers.

The Athenas found some energy in the second quarter as Alyson Young (CMC) contributed two buckets. The third quarter saw both teams at 19 points, keeping the game close.

Dungca went on a tear in the fourth quarter, personally making three baskets including a pair of threes. The Athenas out-scored La Verne 25-14 in the final quarter.

As the game wound down, the Leopards resorted to fouling CMS in order to regain possession. At the line, the Athenas were 16-for-18 on the night for 89%. Dungca herself was a perfect 8-for-8.

Senior Mara Falahee (SCR) snagged a season-high 14 rebounds while junior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) had nine boards. Glosniak, in first career start, was the second highest scorer for the Athenas at 12 points, the most for her this season.

CMS (7-4, 2-0 SCIAC) next hosts Occidental (4-7, 0-2 SCIAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Linde Activities Center at Harvey Mudd College.
