Strong fourth quarter defense seals win for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned its sixth win of the young season after pulling away from the Smith College Pioneers in the second half.

Junior center Claire Donnelly (CMC) connected on back-to-back shots midway through the first to give the Athenas a 10-6 lead, a lead that they would never surrender. Donnelly propelled CMS to a 17-13 first quarter, going four for four from the field.

The Athenas did a solid job of controlling rebounds in their own end in the second and turned those chances into points. Smith kept things close but didn't have any answers for the Athenas offensive attack.

After junior forward Kris Brackmann (CMC) went three for four in the quarter, junior guard Jai Dungca (CMC) sunk a pair of threes in the final 1:10 and CMS entered the break up 33-26.

Brackmann continued her offensive output in the third with a perfect two for two mark on three pointers and free throws. CMS ended the third sitting on a comfortable 12 point lead.

Defense led the way in the fourth quarter for the Athenas who only allowed three points in the final ten minute period.

Sophomore guard Corinne Bogle (CMC) and junior forward Quinn Glosniak (CMC) each posted three defensive rebounds and Glosniak tallied eight points in five minutes as CMS outscored Smith 12-3 in the fourth and earned a much needed 64-43 victory.

The remainder of the 2015-16 schedule will feature conference opponents for the 6-4 (1-0 SCIAC) Athenas. CMS will host La Verne at the Rains Center on Jan. 2.
