No. 3 George Fox rallies in second half to beat Athenas 64-63

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Saturday night's Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball game against No. 3 George Fox looked promising at halftime as the Athenas had the 48-22 lead. The Bruins mounted a comeback and out-scored CMS by 27 points in the second half for the 64-63 win, handing CMS their third loss on the season.

The Athenas came out hot in the first half making 18 buckets and shooting 61% from the field. Sophomore Kailee Severt (CMC) was 4-for-6 in the half and junior Kris Brackmann (CMC) was 4-for-5 with all four of her baskets from beyond the arc.

In the second half, CMS was plagued by turnovers, ultimately totaling 24 on the night. The Bruins pressured the Athenas like they had not seen yet this season and were successful in keeping CMS in the backcourt.

George Fox did not earn the lead until there was less than a minute left on the clock. With well-drawn up defensive plan, the Bruins denied the Athenas a rebuttal and eked out the one-point game for the 64-63 victory.

Senior Mara Falahee (SCR) and juniors Quinn Glosniak (CMC) and Claire Donnelly (CMC) led the charge with the boards as CMS out-rebounded GFU 48-31. Glosniak ended up with a game-high five assists as well.

The Athenas held George Fox to their second lowest scoring night of the season and leading-scorer Justine Benner, to a measly five points, the lowest she's scored since Dec. 2, 2014.

After a holiday break, the Athenas (5-2. 1-0 SCIAC) are back in action on Dec. 29 and 30 against Lewis & Clark and Smith College, both games at 5 p.m.
