Costly turnovers in rematch against Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a rematch of the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came up short to the tune of 76-67 against the University of Puget Sound on the second day of the Wells Classic Tournament. The Athenas lost a little composure and ultimately were unable to maintain their first half lead despite junior Alyson Young's (CMC) career night.

After the first two periods, Young led all players with 12 points, significantly contributing to the 38-34 Athena lead. She added seven more points in the second half for a career-high at 19. Young added eight boards over her 21 minutes to be second on the team in the game.

The first half was very even as each team was within one of the other in points and rebounds. The Athenas shot 56.6%, building on last night's success against Willamette.

Senior Mara Falahee (SCR) put up a jumper early in the third quarter to advantage CMS by six points: 45-39. Then, the Athenas went on almost a six minute scoring drought and lost their lead. The teams traded buckets and free throws until CMS trailed by two points at the end of the third quarter, 55-53.

In the fourth quarter, Young tallied CMS' first four points to tie up the game at 57 apiece. The score was evened again at 59 and 61 before UPS scored eight unanswered points with Emily Sheldon contributing five. Sheldon went for 20 points, consistent with her average of 19.2 so far in the young season.

Junior Jai Dungca (CMC) notched a few more points but it was not enough for the Athenas to recover. Dungca was the team's second highest scorer with 16 on the night, a career high for her as well.

Puget Sound shot 49.1% on the night and 88.2% from the free throw line. CMS was unable to capitalize on a plethora of rebounds – 43 compared to UPS' 22 – and UPS used the Athenas' turnovers to their advantage, scoring 25 points (more than a third of the total) off CMS miscues and aggressive steals by the Loggers.

Junior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) had the game-high of 11 rebounds while Falahee and Young each had eight.

CMS (4-1) plays the next two games on the road traveling to Westmont on Dec. 5 and then opening up SCIAC play at Chapman on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
