Athenas win Hunter Tip-Off Tournament; Donnelly named MVP

New York, N.Y. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team ran the table at the weekend's Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament beating the host school, Hunter, on the second day 73-35. Junior Claire Donnelly (CMC) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after another double-digit scoring performance with 12 points in the game.

In the first quarter, CMS held the Hawks to a mere one basket and four points, highlighting the Athenas' superior defense. Junior forward Quinn Glosniak (CMC) personally had three rebounds equaling Hunter's total for the quarter. Glosniak led CMS in points and boards shooting a stellar 3-for-3. Also scoring for the Athenas was sophomore Kailee Severt (CMC) draining all three free throw attempts and adding a bucket for five total points.

Severt continued on her hot streak into the second quarter, hitting a three to put CMS up 29-8. Senior forward Mara Falahee (SCR) jumped onto the scene snagging three rebounds, ultimately having eight in the game. In the Athenas' final scoring possession, junior Kris Brackmann (CMC) made a three point shot leaving CMS up 35-13 going into halftime.

In each of the third and fourth quarters the Hawks rallied to bump up their scoring into double digits with 11 in each period. Widly Couloute contributed seven points and three rebounds in the second half.

For CMS, Falahee came up with a big three to kick start the third quarter. The Athenas continued to rack up with points until achieving a 41-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

In the game, CMS shot 50% with both Falahee and sophomore Kayalin Akens-Irby (CMC) perfect from the field.

With the win, the Athenas improve to 3-0 on the season and look forward to hosting the Wells Classic Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend. CMS faces two teams out of the Northwest Conference: Willamette (2-0) on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. and Puget Sound (2-1) on Saturday.
