Everyone plays in Athenas’ NY tournament win over St. Joseph’s

New York, N.Y. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team continued to build on their initial success with the 68-50 win over St. Joseph's College (Long Island). In the first game of the Hunter College Tournament, all 16 Athenas saw time and CMS improved to 2-0 on the season.

Despite a briefly hectic start with a handful of turnovers, CMS got on the board with sophomore Kailee Severt (CMC) single-handedly scoring the first eight points including draining two-three pointers, both assisted by senior Mara Falahee (SCR).

Severt played the majority of her 21 minutes and scored 10 of the team's 31 points in the first half. Also with 10 points in the first 20 minutes was junior Claire Donnelly (CMC) who was 4-for-5 in the second quarter alone. Donnelly's success with her short jumper was big in the team shooting 47% from the field in the second quarter.

The Athenas scored 33 points off SJC turnovers. Eight players contributed to steals with junior Kris Brackmann (CMC) leading all players at five.

Partway through the third quarter, junior guard Jai Dungca (CMC) wowed the crowd with back-to-back driving layups. Also in the third quarter, sophomore Kayalin Akens-Irby (CMC) sunk two baskets, one of which was contested and earned her a foul shot.

The Athenas' largest lead was by 25 points, first reached by Akens-Irby knocking down two free throws to give CMS the 67-42 advantage.

Falahee recorded 11 boards, closely followed by Donnelly with ten. Leading the team with 14 points on the night, Donnelly tallied her first double-double on the season. Donnelly's defense led the way in blocks as well with two during the game. Sophomore guard Corinne Bogle (CMC) also recorded a block, the first of her collegiate career.

For St. Joseph, center Andrea Iavarone scored 24 of the Golden Eagles' 50 points.

CMS (2-0) plays another game in the Hunter College Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 21 against the host school, Hunter College. The Athenas play at 3 p.m. (EST) followed by the men's team at 5 p.m. (EST)
