Last second layup for Athenas in home opener against Transylvania

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team started off their 2015-16 campaign with a thrilling 55-53 win over Transylvania on Sunday night at the Linde Activities Center. In the back and forth game, CMS rallied to earn the win with a last second layup by senior Mara Falahee (SCR).

The CMS posts controlled the paint for the majority of the game and collectively totaled 32 points of the team's 55. SCIAC's Newcomer of the Year in 2014-15, Kailee Severt (CMC) started off where she left off last season. She was 6-for-14 on the night including two-three pointers. Junior Alyson Young (CMC) scored nine points in just 12 minutes on the court. One significant bucket was in the Athenas' final possession in the first half when Young made a layup with nine seconds on the clock to bring CMS within one point going into halftime: 31-30.

The Pioneers held a three point advantage at 39-36 after a long three pointer by Shawn Kolani. CMS answered back with junior Claire Donnelly (CMC) driving to the hoop for a contested layup and then she tied up the game on the and-one following a foul.

Spanning the end of the third quarter and into the fourth, the Athenas put up 10 unanswered points, giving CMS its largest lead of the game at 51-43. The teams traded baskets before Katelyn Smith for Transylvania tied up the game at 53 points apiece. Head coach Kristen Dowling wisely used a timeout with 15 seconds left on the clock. After the in-bounds, junior Kris Brackmann (CMC) found Falahee under the hoop with a long pass. Knowing she needed to be quick, Falahee put up a shot and secured the 55-53 win for CMS' first game of the season.

Falahee ended up with nine rebounds followed closely by Quinn Glosniak (CMC) who had seven. Brackmann tallied four assists, topping all players in the game.

Transylvania's duo of Smith and Kristen Hayes scored 18 and 19 points respectively, playing almost the whole game.

CMS (1-0) travels to New York City to play in the Hunter College Tournament next weekend. The Athenas face St. Joseph's College at 5 p.m. EST (2 p.m. PST) on Nov. 20.
