Women’s basketball matched up with Puget Sound in first round of NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team faces the University of Puget Sound in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Mar. 6 at 5 p.m. The game is hosted by George Fox University in Newberg, OR. The field of 64 teams was announced on Mar. 2 by the NCAA on the Selection Show. The women's basketball schedule will be updated as more information becomes available. CMS earned the automatic bid Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) by winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament beating the University of Redlands (56-49) and California Lutheran University (60-43).
George Fox University hosts Penn St. Abington from Pennsylvania in the other first round game.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas (24-3)
The Athenas are repeat SCIAC Tournament Champions making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, second consecutive. CMS swept through conference play for a perfect 16-0 regular season plus two wins in the SCIAC Tournament. The Athenas are 15th in the nation for scoring defense, allowing just 50 points per game. Offensively, Kimberly Scamman and Kris Brackmann lead CMS with 15.8 and 12.9 points respectively. CMS faced George Fox early in the season and lost 63-48, kick-starting a 20 game winning streak.
George Fox University Bruins (27-0)
George Fox earns their 11th NCAA appearance after putting up an undefeated season so far. George Fox is one of three teams in Division III with an undefeated record and is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Bruins beat Puget Sound 66-61 in the Northwest Conference Tournament title game over the weekend for the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Three players average double-digit scoring for the Bruins: Justin Benner, Jami Morris and Lauren Codling.
Puget Sound Loggers (23-4)
The Loggers earned their sixth NCAA appearance, first since 2010, coming from the Northwest Conference with an at-large bid. Puget Sound placed second in the NWC with a 13-3 record and lost to undefeated George Fox in the tournament championship. Against the Bruins, Amanda Froshay recorded her seventh double-double of the year with an average of 14.1 points. Emily Sheldon leads the Loggers with 14.4 points per game.
Penn State Abington Nittany Lions (22-5)
This is the first ever NCAA appearance for Penn State Abington. The Nittany Lions won their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship beating Morrisville State 78-46, the largest margin of victory of an NEAC title game since the 2006-2007 season. Penn St. Abington leads the nation in the fewest points allowed at 46.3 points per game. The Nittany Lions' offense is led by three players in the top five of the NEAC in three point percentage: Kyra Lunsdord, Stephanie Keyes, and Janaiah Elum.
