CLAREMONT, Calif. – The top seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team was dominant in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament against No. 2 California Lutheran, winning 60-43. CMS earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament from the SCIAC. The Athenas will find out where they are headed for the first round on Monday, Mar. 2 at 11:30 a.m. PST. The Athenas came out strong and had a 12-2 lead by the first timeout. During the first minutes, CMS was 6-for-8; Kyra Ray and Kimberly Scamman each with two baskets.
For the entirety of the first half, CMS shot 58%, making 14 buckets of 24 attempts. Mara Falahee and Ray came up with big threes, contributing to the 20 point margin late in the half. The Athena defense held the Regals shooters to 27% efficiency.
Ultimately, four Athenas were in double digits, including three starters: Scamman led with 14, followed by Falahee at 12 and Ray had 10 points. The last time Ray tallied ten or more points was against Cal Lu on Jan. 21.
Coming off the bench, Kailee Severt made every shot she took going 5-for-5 including a three pointer to put CMS up 55-39 in the second half. Seconds later, Kris Brackmann hit a towering three point shot for CMS to pull ahead by 19 points.
Claire Donnelly led the team with two blocks on back-to-back Regal possessions. Jai Dungca and Quinn Glosniak each contributed a pair of points; Dungca's coming from being a perfect 2-for-2 at the foul line.
The Athenas completed the 16-game regular season and two tournament wins with a perfect record against SCIAC opponents.
