Athenas clinch eighth SCIAC title in 66-57 win over Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team continued its dominance of the SCIAC and clinched its eighth conference championship in the 66-57 win over Sixth Street rival, Pomona-Pitzer. This is the second consecutive title for the Athenas.

Three Athenas had double digit scoring nights: Kris Brackmann (CMC) with 16, Kimberly Scamman (CMC) with 12, and Kailee Severt (CMC) put up 11. Brackmann was the game's leading scorer in the second half as well, going 4-for-7 from the field and draining two free throws.

CMS built their lead during the first 30 minutes of play. The 12 point margin at halftime (34-22) was not comfortable for the Athenas who pushed their lead to 19 midway through the second half.

CMS was hot from behind the arc again going 6-for-11 in the game. Jai Dungca (CMC) led with two-three point swishes while Brackman, Kyra Ray (KGI), Scamman and Severt each added one.

Mara Falahee (SCR) led the Athenas with eight rebounds on the night, closely followed by Claire Donnelly (CMC) with seven. CMS out-rebounded the Sagehens 40-26.

The Athenas have now won 17 games in a row and 22 consecutive SCIAC regular season games dating back to the end of last season.

For the Sagehens, Basha Brulee-Wills had 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, the only double-double on the night.

The Athenas wore pink warm-up shirts and socks in honor of survivors of cancer and the continued support for developing a cure. Before the game, the CMS starters were escorted onto the court by five survivors of cancer from the small CMS basketball community.

CMS' (15-0) final game of the regular season is against the No. 2 seed Cal Lutheran (12-2). The Athenas host the Regals at the Rains Center at Pomona-Pitzer in the first game of a double header with the Stags. Game times are at 5 p.m. for the women and 7 p.m. for the men.
