CMS defense holds Chapman in second half; Athenas win 60-54

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a slow first half, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team came charging back to win 60-54 against Chapman, last season's SCIAC co-champion. The Athenas' defense only allowed 21 points in the second half, stifling the Panthers' usually potent shooting game.

The teams traded leads for the first nine minutes of the second half before CMS rallied and put together a 13 point run. Freshman Kailee Severt scored six of those points with assists by sophomore Quinn Glosniak (CMC) and senior Kimberly Scamman (CMC). Jai Dungca (CMC) capped of that scoring run with a surprising three-pointer for the Athenas to take the 50-38 lead with 7:48 on the clock.

The Panthers slowly closed the gap to get within three points at 57-54 off a pair of free throws by Nicole Moy. The Athenas secured the win with a steal by Scamman in the final 12 seconds.

CMS far out-stole Chapman, 11-2, while the Panthers had the edge on rebounds, 37-31.

In the second half, the Athenas held CU to 23.3% shooting from the field with the Panthers missing 23 shots.

Scamman was the evening's leading scorer with 16 points followed closely by Severt who notched 14, tying her season high. Dungca put up her second highest scoring game in her career with nine points. She only scored more (11 points) against Chapman in the SCIAC Tournament Championship game in 2014. Sophomore Kris Brackmann (CMC) scored nine points as well including a well-timed three in the first half.

Mara Falahee (SCR) led CMS with seven rebounds, six of which were for the offense to help the Athenas put back 10 points on the night.

Andrea Villenueva and Laura Johnson were each in double figures in scoring for the game and Moy led the Panthers in rebounds with eight.

CMS is now 12-0 in SCIAC with four games remaining in the regular season. The Athenas are on the road on Feb. 11 at Redlands and Feb. 14 at Occidental.
