Athenas earn double digit wins in SCIAC with 63-45 victory over Oxy

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team has beaten every other SCIAC opponent as of their Wednesday night victory over Occidental College. The Athenas won 63-45 after putting up 37 points in the first half.

CMS has now won 17 regular season conference games in a row: seven from the end of the 2013-14 season and a perfect 10-0 record this year.

In tonight's win, sophomore Quinn Glosniak (CMC) stepped up and was 6-for-9 from the field plus a free throw for 13 points. Glosniak's previous career high was eight points against Caltech on Jan. 18, 2014. Four Athenas were in double digit scoring. Sophomore Kris Brackmann (CMC) led with 15 points, 11 from the first half. Sophomore center Claire Donnelly (CMC) totaled up 10 points and senior Kimberly Scamman (CMC) had 11.

The Athenas' defense held Occidental to 45 points on the night, consistent with the current average points allowed of 44.8 in conference. Overall, CMS holds teams to an average of 51.1 points, placing the team in the top 25 in the nation for fewest points allowed.

The Athenas only permitted four Tiger offensive rebounds while snagging nine for themselves. CMS won the turnover battle and ultimately scored 22 points off turnovers.

CMS went up early in the game and maintained a high level of play throughout, shooting 49% on the night.

Midori McElwee came off the bench and hit three towering three pointers for nine points as the Tigers' leading scorer. Grace Baranowski led with seven defensive rebounds for Oxy.

The Athenas (16-3, 10-0) go on the road to play at Whittier (7-9, 3-5) on Jan. 31 before returning home to the Linde Activities Center on Feb. 4 to face Chapman (8-8, 6-2).
