Valiant effort falls short against No. 17 George Fox

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team faced stiff competition in No. 17 George Fox and lost 63-48 on Saturday night in Harvey Mudd's Linde Activities Center. The Athenas matched George Fox in points during the first ten minutes of the second half before the aggressive Bruins took control of the game.

The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 lead but were quickly reeled back in as the Athenas scored on a steal and then layup by sophomore Claire Donnelly (CMC) followed by a three point shot by classmate Kris Brackmann (CMC). Each time George Fox went ahead, CMS punched back, narrowing the margin. In the first half, Brackmann had eight points and junior Mara Falahee (CMC) led with five rebounds.

In the exciting, fast-paced game, several CMS players showcased their skill under pressure. Sophomore Jai Dungca (CMC) fought off and weaved through George Fox's backcourt defense. Brackmann opened up a layup opportunity with a behind the back dribble in the paint. Kimberly Scamman (CMC) had a nose for steals, recording four in the game.

In the second half, the Bruins out-rebounded the Athenas 23-14. Additionally, four George Fox players put up double-digit points on the night: Justine Benner, Sammy Nauli, Lauren Codling, and Jami Morris.

Scamman had a game-high of 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half when she went 4-7 from the field.

George Fox is the second top-25 team CMS has faced this season (the other being No. 10 Wheaton). CMS looks to improve through playing these tough opponents early in the season.

The Athenas continue SCIAC play in a Monday matchup with Caltech on Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at home in the Linde Activities Center.
