Rally by CMS in final minutes lead to win over Augsburg

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A 15-0 run in a five minute stretch late in the second half ended up being the turning point in the game as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team erased a six-point deficit to get a 50-40 win over Augsburg in the Wells Classic on Nov. 28 at Pomona-Pitzer's Voelkel Gymnasium. CMS overcame a poor shooting effort – 31 percent – and 20 turnovers to get the bounce-back win, which ended their brief two-game skid. CMS is now 2-2 on the season.

Trailing 37-31 at the six-minute mark of the second half, the decisive run began when senior guard Kimberly Scamman (CMC) hit her first three-pointer of the game to narrow Augsburg's lead to 37-34 with 5:47 left on the clock. Scamman capped off the run with a pair of free throws which gave CMS a 46-37 lead with 1:07 remaining in the game. During the 15-0 run, Scamman accounted for 10 of the team's 15 points, while guard Kyra Ray (KGI) added a three-pointer and freshman center Kailee Severt (CMC) added a pair of free throws. The run began with CMS hitting three-pointers on three of its first four possessions.

With 21 seconds remaining in the game, Augsburg's Laykn Bauer broke their five-minute scoreless streak with a three which narrowed CMS' lead to 46-40. Bauer's basket however would be their last basket of the game as CMS closed out the win with four free throws by sophomore forward Kris Brackmann (CMC).

Of CMS' 50 points, 32 came in the second half as CMS outscored Augsburg 32-23 over the final 20 minutes. The three-point shooting for CMS in the second half ended up being the difference on the scoreboard as CMS hit four from behind the arc in the second half compared with one in the first half.

The CMS defense held Augsburg to 27 percent shooting from the field in the game. Abbey Luger led Augsburg with 12 points while Ray had a team-high 13 points for CMS. Scamman and Brackmann each had 12 points for CMS.

Junior forward Mara Falahee (SCR), sophomore forward Claire Donnelly (CMC) and sophomore forward Quinn Glosniak (CMC) were all over the boards for CMS with 10, nine and seven rebounds, respectively. Scamman also had seven rebounds.

CMS is back in action on Nov. 29 against UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. to close out the Wells Classic. The game is scheduled to be played at Harvey Mudd College's Linde Activities Center.
