Athenas best Pacific Lutheran 63-44 in season opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team opened its season against in-region opponent, Pacific Lutheran, and won 63-44. The Athenas scored the first six points of the game and never relinquished the lead as senior Kimberly Scamman (CMC) and freshman Kailee Severt (CMC) each scored 12 points.

In the first half, the CMS offense had 12 rebounds, greatly contributing to their 30 points in the half. Also in the half, Scamman was 3-3 in free throw attempts. The Lutes worked their way back into the game, cutting CMS' lead to eight points by halftime.

The Athenas scored eight unanswered points to begin the second half, establishing their control of the game. Sophomore Jai Dungca (CMC) was CMS' leading scorer in the second half, including hitting two-three pointers

The taller CMS team outmatched Pacific Lutheran in the paint, earning more than half of their points from up close. Sophomore Alyson Young (CMC) racked up six points in just five minutes of play in the second half.

Sophomore Kris Brackmann (CMC) was perfect from the foul line in her three attempts during the game.

For PLU, Jori Hall led the Lutes with 18 points in the 34 minutes she played.

Tonight's win bodes well for the Athenas later in the season for SCIAC play as the Lutes beat Pomona-Pitzer 58-56 on Nov. 15 in a very close game.

CMS, now 1-0, next travels to Chicago area to play Whittenberg on Nov. 21 and Wheaton on Nov. 22.
