Athenas dominate Tigers 75-36

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team beat Occidental College 75-36 on Thursday night in Ducey Gym. The Athenas scored 40 in the first half and unequivocally dominated the entire game. This strong showing by the CMS offense will propel them into the upcoming rivalry weekend.

CMS entered the game trailing Chapman to tie first place in SCIAC by one win.

In the first half, senior Kyra Ray and junior Kimberly Scamman led the Athenas with 11 and 12 points respectively. Freshman Claire Donnelly gave CMS more chances to shoot with five offensive rebounds.

After leading 40-16 in the first twenty minutes of play, the Athenas continued to put pressure on the Tigers and tacked on another 35 points in the second half. Freshman Ty Wheetley-Amaya entered the game and scored eight points for the Athenas including going 3-4 from the free throw line. Senior Sarah King drained two three-pointers to push the Athenas' lead to 35 points.

Occidental's Stefanie Young scored a team-high eight points for the Tigers while Elizabeth Messick totaled six rebounds on the night.

With the win tonight, CMS ties Chapman for first place in SCIAC at 9-2 each with Redlands just behind them at 9-3. The Athenas go to Pomona-Pitzer to play their Sixth Street rivals on Saturday at 7 p.m. In their last meeting, CMS won 61-50.
