Defense propels Athenas to bounce-back win over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Just a couple days after its loss to Chapman, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team bounced back with a 70-43 conference win over Whittier on Saturday night at Ducey Gym. With the win, CMS moved to 16-3, 8-2 in SCIAC while Whittier dropped to 1-18 overall.

CMS led throughout the game with the exception of the first couple of minutes. Whittier hung tight in the first half as CMS led 36-25 at the break. CMS broke the game open in the second half, opening up its largest lead of the game to 29 points on a few occasions.

CMS' defense was the story of the night as the defense held Whittier to 21.6 percent shooting from the field and 16.7 percent from the three-point line.

Both freshman Kris Brackmann and junior Kimberly Scamman were in double-figure scoring for CMS with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Brackmann also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Whittier had 23 turnovers which converted into 25 points for CMS.

Danielle Hays had a team-high 12 points for Whittier.

Next up for CMS is a home game vs. Occidental (Feb. 6) and at Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 8)
