Missed layups cause second loss for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned only their second loss of the season in Saturday's game vs. Chapman. The Athenas lost 55-48 to the Panthers in the first game of 2014 in Ducey Gym. Missed opportunities and layups cost the game for CMS.

In the low-scoring first half, Mara Falahee and Chloe Dobbert led the Athenas going a combined 7-8 from the free throw line and each contributing a basket as well. CMS was chasing Chapman for most of the first half and took the lead with 20 seconds to go. The Athenas were unable to retain the lead going into the half after giving up a last second layup.

CMS shot only 19% (5-26) to Chapman's 33% (9-27) in the half. Trailing by just one point at the half (19-18), the Athenas had hope for an improved second half.

While the scoring increased in the second half, the Panthers' shooting proficiency bested the Athenas.  Chapman's duo of Andrea Villanueva and Kimi Takaoka scored 30 of their team's 55 points on the night.

Kimberly Scamman was still able to put up a game high 19 points despite battling a winter cold. She was 5-5 on the night from the foul line putting her at a superb 83% (77-93) on the season. Kris Brackmann added six points of her own, shooting 3-7 from the field.

Missing 18 layups, the Athenas were unable to beat the Panthers, causing only the second loss of the season and breaking a seven game winning streak.  The Athenas are now 10-2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC. The remaining 13 games of the season are all conference opponents.

CMS go to La Verne this Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 pm.
