CLAREMONT, Calif. – On a night when the offense struggled for much of the game, the defense stepped up and helped the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team to a 61-50 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday night at Ducey Gymnasium. The win moved CMS to 7-1, 2-0 in SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer fell to 3-5, 2-1 in SCIAC. The Athenas are off to their best start since 2010-11 when they began the season with a 10-1 record.
On Thursday night, CMS forced 19 Pomona-Pitzer turnovers and had nine steals to go along with a 10-rebound advantage to get the win. In a game that saw three ties and seven lead changes, Pomona-Pitzer led at times and stayed close for the duration as the final 61-50 score was the largest lead for both teams.
A basket by Amelia Hummel after an offensive rebound with 14:25 left in the game got Pomona-Pitzer within a point at 40-39 which is as close as they would get in the second half. Two free throws by senior C Chloe Dobbert on the next possession started an 8-2 run for CMS that pushed the lead to 48-41 with 9:01 remaining in the game. Pomona-Pitzer got within three points at 48-45 with 6:43 left in the game, but CMS closed out the final six-plus minutes on a 13-5 run to secure its seventh win of the season.
Senior G Madeline Barnes had a team-high 13 points while freshman C Claire Donnelly fell one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore F Mara Falahee had a game-high 12 rebounds including seven offensive boards. Jenn Okonkwo had a game-high 14 points to go along with nine rebounds to lead Pomona-Pitzer.
