Scamman sets free throw record in team win over UC Santa Cruz

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team beat UC Santa Cruz in the second and final day of the David Wells Classic 63-47. Junior Kimberly Scamman set the CMS free throw record making 17 during the game while the Athenas played well and controlled the tempo of the game behind her.

Just in the first half, Scamman had sunk all 12 foul shots. By the end of the game, the 17 makes earned her the CMS women's record. The previous record holder, Felicia Davis, had made 15 in one game during the 2000-2001 season.

CMS held UC Santa Cruz to 10-29 in field goals and the Athenas had a 35-24 lead at half time

The Slugs scored the first six points of the second half to cut the Athenas' lead to five, but that was as close as the Slugs got. CMS pulled ahead to increase their lead to ten points with shots by senior Madeline Barnes and freshman Jai Dungca.

The Athenas were 13-17 from the line in the second half to total 30-35 on the night, an exceptional 86%. Sophomore Mara Falahee, freshman Kris Brackmann and Barnes were each a perfect 2-2 in free throws.

Ultimately, the both the Athenas' offense and defense communicated well and were able to set the pace of the game.

CMS travels to Whittier to take on the Poets on December 5th at 7:30 pm and then return home to play in the final CMS-PP women's rivalry game in Ducey Gym.  The Athenas play the Sagehens on Thursday, December 12th at 7:30 pm.
