Pete Welsh

CMC '50

Pete Welsh began school in the fall of 1947 as a member of one of the first classes of Claremont Men's College.  A South Pasadena HS graduate, he spent four years in the Army during World War II prior to enrolling at CMC.  While competing for Pomona-Claremont teams, he was a four-sport letterwinner.  He competed for four years in both track & field and basketball and one year each in tennis and football.  Competing at a time prior to Pomona-Claremont attending National Championships, he was a dominant force in track and was the first SCIAC Track & Field Champion from CMC (he won the 100 yards in 1948).

Upon graduation in 1950, Welsh held four individual school records: 100 yards, 9.9; 220 yards, 21.8; High Jump, 5-8; Long Jump, 23-2.5.  The long jump record stood for an amazing 57 years from 1949 until 2006 and he is still the second best long jumper in school history.  He will always be considered the foundation of CMS Men's Track & Field and was the inaugural inductee into the CMS Hall of Fame in 1989.
