Interim tag removed; Glenn Stewart takes over as CMS Track & Field head coach
CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a nationwide search, Terrance Tumey, the Director of Athletics, Physical Education & Recreational Services for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and George R. Roberts Fellow for Claremont McKenna College, has selected Glenn Stewart to lead the CMS track & field program as its head coach. Stewart served as the interim head coach from the midway point of the 2015 season through the 2016 season, and the team had a great deal of success under his leadership.
"During our head coaching search, we looked for a leader who had the ability to set the foundation for the program, someone who strove for daily improvement with our student-athletes and pushed the Athenas and Stags to reach their potential in academics and athletics," Tumey said. "Having been an extremely successful coach with CMS for quite some time, Coach Stewart understood the expectations for the program, what core values needed to be implemented, and how to develop our students. I look forward to seeing our track & field program excel under Coach Stewart's guidance."
During Stewart's time as interim head coach, he led the Athenas and Stags to SCIAC championships in 2015 and 2016. The 2016 season marked the 13th time in CMS history that both teams earned conference championships in the same year. Also in 2016, the women's team came in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships for the highest finish in program history, and sprinter Tyra Abraham (SCR) won the first 100 meters national championship for the Athenas. All told, there were six All-America performances under Stewart's leadership in 2016.

Through my previous four years with CMS, I have built a relationship with the student-athletes in the program that will help our teams reach new goals and achievements. I look forward to continuing the success of CMS Track and Field as the next head coach."
The 2016-17 school year will be the fifth season coaching in some capacity for Coach Stewart at CMS. He came to CMS after coaching at Cal Poly Pomona for five seasons. He joined the Broncos in the middle of the 2008 season and coached the vaulters. Stewart served as the head coach of the Glendora High School track and field program from 2001-2008. He first started at Glendora in 1997 as an assistant coach and took over the head coaching role in 2001. During his seven years as head coach, Stewart had six CIF Division I individual titles and trained more than 50 individual league champions.
As a student-athlete, Stewart attended and competed at UC Irvine and Cal State L.A. During his time on the UCI and CSULA campuses, Stewart starred on the track and field teams. In 1994 while at CSULA, Stewart won conference championships in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). At the NCAA Division II National Championships, he garnered two All-American titles in both relays. Stewart also qualified individually in the 200m (1994) and 400m (1993) as well. In 1986 as a freshman at UCI, he was a USA Jr. National Finalist in the 400 meters.
