Middle distance, sprint athletes shine at Oxy Invite

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sprinters and middle distance runners for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field teams had standout performances at the Occidental Invite on May 7 at Bill Henry Track in a meet that saw several Division I, open and post-collegiate athletes compete.

Top performers for the Athenas were junior middle distance runner Carmen Mejia (CMC) and freshman hurdler Sabrine Griffith (CMC) and for the Stags, freshman sprinter Corbin Bethurem (CMC).

Mejia followed up her conference championship in the 800 meters championship with a time of 2:09.66 on Saturday which is just off her CMS record (2:09.30) from the 2015 NCAA Championships. Of the participating college athletes, she was the fourth overall at this high level meet, and currently ranks fourth in Division III in the event during the 2016 season.

Griffith finished second in the 100 meter hurdles at SCIAC. This week, she recorded her second PR in two weeks, running 14.83 in the event which ranks fourth at CMS all-time.

For the Stags, Bethurem stepped up to run the 400 meters for the second time this season and he had a PR of 48.46, which moves him to fifth all-time at CMS.

Next on the schedule for CMS is the Redlands Final Qualifier (May 18-19), the last qualifying event for the NCAA Division III Championships that are May 26-28 in Waverly, Iowa.
