CMS earns majority of All-SCIAC track and field awards
PASADENA, Calif. – This season marks the 23rd men's and 15th women's track and field titles for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the 13th year that both programs have achieved the feat in the same season.
CMS swept the Field Athlete of the Year awards with junior Cameron Van (CMC) winning the high jump (2.02m - 6-07.50), long jump (7.01m - 23-00.00) and triple jump (14.53m - 47-08.00) in the SCIAC Championships and junior Vaiva Palunas (SCR) repeated as AOY, setting the SCIAC record in the discus (47.35m – 155-04,) and winning the discus (47.28 – 155-01) and shot put (13.26m – 43-06) at the Championships.
Sophomore Tyra Abraham (SCR), who was named Female Track Athlete of the Year, owned the top of the podium in the 100m (11.875) and 200m (24.94) and shared the honors with her team in the 4x100m (3:50.53). She holds the CMS and SCIAC record in 100m and CMS in the 200m.
Freshman Sabrine Griffith (CMC) earned the Women's Newcomer of the Year award after a second place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.86) and third place in the long jump (5.40m) in the Championships.
CMS also took home Coaching Staff of the Year honors on the men's side. Head coach Glenn Stewart is assisted by John Goldhammer, Christa Youngern, Emily Ramey, Bob Ramsey, Jennifer Tave, and Collin Christensen.
The Athenas had at least one athlete in the top-3 at the Championships in 15 events while the Stags had a top-3 finish in 14 events. Podium sweeps occurred in the women's hammer throw and the men's 1500m run.
