CMS sweeps at final SCIAC multi-dual meet; breaks more records at Bryan Clay

La Verne, Calif. – In the final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) multi-dual meet before the SCIAC Championships, the men's and women's team each went 4-0 sweeping Chapman, Cal Lutheran, Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne. On Thursday and Friday last week, some athletes additionally competed at the Bryan Clay Invite and broke more CMS and SCIAC records.

After losing the opening dual meet to Occidental, the men's team needed to beat either La Verne or Pomona-Pitzer to have a chance at coming away with a conference championship. Ultimately, the Stags defeated PP 100-63 and ULV 87-76.

The top male performance was a pole vault by sophomore Michael Wagenveld (CMC) that set the new CMS record at 5.00m/16-04. He is now No. 3 all-time in the SCIAC and currently sixth nationally.

There were three key performances that contributed to the wins that exceeded their projected places and provided the margin of victory. Sophomore Kofi Sekyi-Appiah (HMC) had excellent races in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, placing second in the 100 behind teammate Corbin Bretherum (CMC) and third in the 200.  Freshman Eric Myers (CMC) gained five more points than projected with a big PR of 6.63m/21-09 for third in the long jump and a third place in the high jump at 1.82m. In the 400 meter run, freshman Matthew Guillory's (HMC) personal best gained three additional points for the Stags with a time of 51.06.

The Athenas completed an undefeated SCIAC dual meet season with the sweep on Saturday. Sophomore Tyra Abraham (SCR) and junior Vaiva Palunas (SCR) led the way, dominating in their respective events. In the 100 meter dash, Abraham matched her time from the CMS record-setting performance on Friday (at the Bryan Clay Invite) of 11.91, over 0.4 seconds faster than the next competitor, and then almost 0.7 seconds faster than the No. 2 finisher in the 200 at 25.03. Palunas cruised to her victory in the discus with 46.45/152-05 throw and then was neck-and-neck with teammate Emily Bassett (CMC) in both the hammer throw and shot put, ultimately winning both.

Other strong performances on the women's side included sophomore Bryn McKillop (SCR) who recorded a seemingly easy win in the 800 meter run at 2:17.30. Freshman Jacquelyn Desmond (SCR) PRed for the third week in a row to win the pole vault. Her 3.50m/11-05.75 jump now ranks her No. 3 all-time at CMS.

In the Bryan Clay Invite on Thursday and Friday last week, many Division I teams, post-collegiate and international athletes competed alongside CMS athletes in almost every event, making for elite competition. Two SCIAC and four CMS records were broken during the meet.

Abraham broke her own SCIAC & CMS record in the 100, running 11.91 into a negative 0.6 wind.  She was sixth collegian overall finishing behind five Division I athletes. Additionally, she broke her CMS 200m record, set just last week, with a 24.67 and is now fifth all-time in the SCIAC in the event.

Palunas broke her own SCIAC and CMS record in the discus again, this time at 47.35m/155-04. This is her second throw this season beyond the previous record. She was fourth overall in the event and third collegian.

Junior Joshua Sealand (HMC) set the CMS 1500 meter run record with 3:47.34 and is now No. 5 all-time in the SCIAC. Senior Evan Molineux (CMC) was just behind Sealand at 3:47.88, also under the old CMS record to climb on the all-time list.

Finally, Bryn McKillop ran for a personal record in the 1500 meter run at 4:29.92 - just 0.66 off the CMS record.

The teams next compete in the SCIAC Championships April 29-30 at Occidental, hosted by Caltech. After the dual meets, the CMS women lead 8-0 and the CMS men are in second with and 7-1 record from this season.
