Mostatabi and Wong lead CMS in first day at NCAA Championships

CANTON, N.Y. – In the first day at the NCAA Championships at St. Lawrence University, 11 of the 13 members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field national team competed. Senior Sara Mostatabi (CMC) and sophomore Matt Wong (CMC) earned All-American honors and points for CMS placing seventh in the 10,000m and eighth in long jump respectively.

Mostatabi finished the 10,000m race in 36:12.75, good for seventh place overall. In the long jump, Wong jumped 7.19m (23-07.25) for his third jump, putting him in the top nine and advancing to the finals. That mark ended up being his best, earning him the eighth place finish overall.

Sophomore Vaiva Palunas (SCR) competed in the women's discus event and threw 37.86m (124-02) for her longest, landing her in 21st place.

In the women's 4x100m preliminary races, the CMS team of senior Madison Knaub (CMC), sophomore Hanna Tarleton (CMC), freshman Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC), freshman Tyra Abraham (SCR) were ultimately .08 seconds off qualifying for the finals with a time of 47.33, placing 10th.

The other Athena relay team – the 4x400m with Tarleton, sophomore Carmen Mejia (SCR), freshman Brina Jablonski (CMC), Cameron-Lewis– competed in the preliminary race, placing tenth at 3:50.43, just missing qualifying for the finals by .17 seconds.

Sophomore Joshua Sealand (HMC) qualified for the finals of the men's 1500m with a ninth place finish at 3:55.16 in the preliminary races. Teammate junior Evan Molineux (CMC) finished less than a second later at 3:55.76 in 15th place and was unable to qualify.

Tarleton also competed in the prelims of the women's 400m hurdles. She posted a time of 1:01.95, qualifying her for the chance to race in the finals on Saturday.

Tomorrow, Cameron-Lewis races in the women's 400m prelims, Abraham in the women's 100m prelims, and Mejia in the 800m prelims.
