Final meet before SCIAC Championships in the books for CMS
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field team competed at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on April 24-25 and CMS competitors for both the Athenas and Stags excelled in a wide variety of events.
Freshman Tyra Abraham (SCR) crossed the finish line in the 100-meter dash in 12.29 for a 22nd place finish, just seven-one hundredths of a second off her school record time.
The 4x100 meter relay team of senior Madison Knaub (CMC), sophomore Hanna Tarleton (CMC), freshman Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC) and Abraham came up with an eighth place time at the meet as they combined for a time of 48.24. Their time was about a half second off their time of 47.78 that they ran earlier this season which is third all-time in CMS history.
In the next event of the meet, the 4x400 meter relay, CMS' 'A' team finished in second place behind the University of Minnesota. The time of 3:49.51 is a new record for the team of Tarleton, sophomore Carmen Mejia (SCR), freshman Brina Jablonski (CMC) and Cameron-Lewis. It is also second in the Athenas' top-10 and is the third fastest time this season in Division III.
Field events saw sophomore Ellen Seidel (HMC) in the pole vault put together a mark of 3.40 meters, just short of her personal best of 3.46 which she had earlier in the season and ranks fourth all-time for the Athenas. Sophomore Vaiva Palunas (SCR) set a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 12.62 meters, the second farthest shot put mark ever for an Athena. Her previous best mark of 12:36 previously was second in the program's top-10. Freshman Emily Bassett (CMC) also had a CMS top-10 on Saturday and a personal best in the shot put. Her mark of 11.91 meters is now fifth all-time which tops her previous best mark of 11.89.
Palunas, the CMS record holder in the discus (44.51) had another outstanding mark on Saturday (44.35) but it fell just short of her record.
On the men's side, junior Evan Molineux (CMC) finished in 10th in the 800 meters at the Triton Invite at 1:53.17 for the Stags' fastest time in the event. In the men's pole vault, freshman Michael Wagenveld (CMC) placed in ninth in the 27-man field in the open event at 4.50 meters. His mark Saturday is a Stags' top-10 mark, but is short of his personal best which ranks sixth, set earlier this season. Sophomore Zane Bodenbender (HMC) improved on his personal best in the pole vault, but his mark of 4.35 meters still keeps him in ninth all-time.
Sophomore Matt Wong (CMC) placed in sixth in 32-man long jump invitational field with a jump of 6.96 meters. Sophomore Cam Van (CMC) triple jumped his way to a fifth place finish at the Triton Invite as his jump came in at 14.08 meters.
The SCIAC Championships get underway on Friday, May 1 and span two days (May 1-2) at Occidental College. The Stags are in search of their 22nd conference championship while the Athenas are going for their 14th overall.
