Track & field teams finish 8-0 in SCIAC dual meets

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With the SCIAC Championships looming on the horizon, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field teams completed their conference dual meet seasons 8-0. Both the Athenas and Stags went 4-0 in a dual meet against Caltech, Chapman, Cal Lutheran and Whittier on April 11 at the Burns Track Complex. The Athenas defeated Cal Lu 112-41, Caltech 136-10, Chapman 125-19 and Whittier 133-12. The Stags defeated Chapman 140-14, Caltech 142-21, Cal Lu 104-58 and Whittier 126-36.

All told, the Athenas won 13 events on Saturday and 10 of the event times or marks broke into the Athenas’ top-10 list. Hanna Tarleton (CMC) participated in three winning events; the 400-meter hurdles (62.83), 4x100 meter relay (47.78) and 4x400 meter relay (3:54.96). Tarleton teamed up with Madison Knaub (CMC), Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC) and Tyra Abraham (SCR) in the 4x100 win. Tarleton, Carmen Mejia (SCR), Brina Jablonski (CMC) and Cameron-Lewis were the winning 4x400 team as they finished roughly 16 seconds ahead of the next closest team.

Double winners for the Athenas were Abraham (4x100 and 100-meter dash), Knaub (4x100 and 200-meter dash), Amy Hollshwandner (CMC – 100-meter hurdles and long jump), Cameron-Lewis (4x100 and 4x400 relays) and Vaiva Palunas (SCR – shot put and discus). Palunas’ shot put (40-06.75) and discus (144-05) marks both ranked in the top-10 all-time for CMS.

Single event winners for the Athenas not already mentioned were Bryn McKillop (SCR; 800 meters – 2:17.65), Ellen Seidel (HMC; pole vault – 11-03.75), Elizabeth Lee (HMC; triple jump – 35-09.50) and Emily Bassett (CMC; hammer throw – 164-06).

For the Stags, there were four double event winners, with three of those athletes coming from the winning 4x400 meter relay team. John Dewald (CMC), Justin Jones (HMC), Evan Molineux (CMC) and Josh Sealand (HMC) won the 4x400 with a time of 3:25.32. Jones also won the 400 meters (50.22) while Sealand won the 800 meters (1:55.30) and Molineux won the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:44.81). The other double event winner came in the field events when Cam Van won the high jump (6-02.75) and the triple jump (46-11.00). His triple jump mark landed in CMS’ top-10.

Other event winners were Garrett Ryan (CMC; 1500 meters – 3:59.41), Chad Redman (CMC; 400 hurdles – 55.83), Dewald, Michael Wagenveld (CMC; pole vault – 14-05.50), Matt Wong (CMC; long jump - 22-08.50), Sam Perrella (CMC; hammer throw - 173-10) and Joshua Naon (CMC; javelin throw - 141-03).

Next up for both the Athenas and Stags is the Azusa Pacific Invite on Friday, April 17, followed by the Triton Invite in San Diego on April 25 and the SCIAC Championships at Occidental May 1-2.
