Track & field teams open SCIAC competition

The track & field teams battled hard in competitive dual meets at home against Cal Lutheran and La Verne, but had opposite results.  The men won both meets, 97-61 against Cal Lu and 85-73 against La Verne, while the women lost both, 85-78 against Cal Lutheran and 90-73 against La Verne.  Occidental also participated with the meet and, paired with CMS in dual meets this season, will score against CMS at the final dual meet in April.

The Stags earned big points in the distance and hurdle races and then had four key wins in the field events to hold off the Leopards of La Verne.  CMS had six outright winners including Zorg Loustalet in the 5000, Bob Owlett in the steeplechase, Cam Van in the high jump, Matt Wong in the long jump, Sam Perrella in the shot put and Alex Rich in the hammer throw.  15 personal bests were recorded in the meet including Mac Hightower (1:56.17) in the 800, Garrett Ryan (3:59.70), Tyler Robinson (4:01.86) and Kyle Lund (4:10.25) in the 1500, Seghor Joseph (15.93), Matt Espy (15.97) and Caleb Cunha (16.59) in the 110 hurdles, Ben Kunst (56.12) in the 400 hurdles, Owlett (9:55.2) in the steeple, Van in the high jump (6-4.75), long jump (20-4) and triple jumps (42-9.75), Rich (42-8.5) in the shot put, Perrella (154-0) in the hammer and Josh Naon (142-1) in the javelin.

The Athenas held an advantage on both the Leopards and the Regals of Cal Lutheran on the track, but had too big of a deficit in the field to pull out wins.  CMS had two double winners on the day: Hanna Tarleton in the 200 and 400 meters and Ellyn Erving in the long and triple jumps.  Meg O'Keefe won the 400 hurdles and Kaitlyn Spees won the steeplechase.  11 personal bests were recorded in the meet including Sara Mostatabi (4:47.98), Jen Lehr (5:00.30) and Kathleen Muenzen (5:18.05) in the 1500, Tess Williams (18:07.88) and Leah Snider (22:39.56) in the 5000, Spees (11:35.2) in the steeple, Jessica Ng (16-4.5) in the long jump, Vaiva Palunas (36-9.75) in the shot put, Nicole Laliberte (121-10), Amanda Maheras (112-6) and Snider (91-11) in the hammer.

CMS will compete in invitationals on both sides of the upcoming spring break and then return to SCIAC competition on March 29.  They will compete against Caltech and Pomona-Pitzer at Occidental.
