Season Preview: 2014 CMS Track & Field

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track & field team gets its season underway over the weekend with a meet at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, February 15 at 10:30 am.  The Stags are the defending SCIAC Champions after finishing 7-0 in dual meets and winning the SCIAC Championship meet last season.  The Athenas finished 7-1 in dual meets last year and tied for second overall in the SCIAC standings.

The Stags return three SCIAC Champions including Justin Jones in the 800 meters, Evan Molineux in the 1500 meters and Matt Espy in the 400 hurdles.  Eight additional men scored in the championship meet last season including senior Colin Briskman, juniors Ashraf Mathkour, Chad Redman and Sam Perrella and sophomores Mac Hightower, Joel Kirk, Zorg Loustalet (2013 cross country All-American) and Alex Rich.

Allison Barnwell is the Athenas' lone returning SCIAC Champion.  She won the steeplechase last season and is also a two-time cross country All-American.  12 additional women scored in the championship meet last season including seniors Ellyn Erving (2012 SCIAC Champ in long and triple jumps) and Meg O'Keefe (2012 SCIAC Champ in 400 hurdles), juniors Danielle Knott, Jackie Kroll, Allison Krugman, Cora Miller, Sara Mostatabi, Kaitlyn Spees and Taia Wu and sophomores Alex Arnett, Nicki Maslan and Bridget Blum.

Head Coach Kendra Reimer is excited about the large freshmen contingent on the team.  "We added 44 freshmen, 22 each for the men and the women, to the team to go along our 52 returning athletes.  There are several outstanding athletes in the freshmen class that will make an immediate impact and we have also added depth in several areas."  Some of the key freshmen include Hanna Tarleton, Ellie Eaton and Carmen Mejia for the women and Matt Wong, Josh Sealand and Alex Lombardo for the men.

Following this weekend's opener, the team will host the 18th Annual Rossi Relays on February 22 and then open the SCIAC dual meet season at home on March 8 against Cal Lutheran and La Verne.
