CMS Falls to #18 Gustavus 8-1
Sophomore Hannah Kornfeld (Ross, CA [pictured right]) won her
team-leading 10th match of the season with a close 5-7, 6-3, (10-4)
victory at #2 singles. Kornfeld jumped to an early 5-2 lead
in the first set, but her opponent battled back to take the set
7-5. Kornfeld answered with a convincing 3-0 lead and
eventual 6-3 win in the second set. Kornfeld’s match
was decided by a super tiebreaker, which she took 10-4.
Unfortunately, the Athenas lost the overall match 8-1.
Gustavus took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles.
Kornfeld and Senior Jessica Fox (Castlerock, CO) teamed up at #1
doubles, but despite a solid net game, the pair fell 8-6. In
singles, Gustavus won in straight sets at #4, #5, and #6. On
the top three courts, each match split sets, forcing super
tiebreakers since the match was already decided. Fox fought
hard to go up in the breaker 7-3 and 9-8 for a match point, but her
opponent came back to pull out the tiebreaker 12-10 and take the
match. Senior Elisa La Cava (Woodinville, WA) battled back to
a 6-3 second set win after dropping the first 2-6, but was bested
in a super tiebreaker 10-3.
CMS is now 10-5 overall and faces tough SCIAC competition against
Occidental College on Friday, April 3 at 2 PM and Redlands
University on Saturday, April 4 at 9:30 AM, both matches away.
