Newest Stags Impressive at ITA Regionals

Led by singles semifinalist Robbie Erani (FR -
New York, NY), four freshmen made impressive debuts at the ITA West
Regionals. Erani, Victor Chien (FR - Diamond Bar,
CA), Ari Zyskind (FR - Concord, MA) and
Brandon Wei (FR - Portland, OR) combined for
fifteen wins against six losses in a tournament featuring many of
the top Division III players in the west.
Erani defeated two seeded players on his way to the semis, taking
out #11 Nick Tagliarino of Pomona-Pitzer 6-1, 6-1 in the second
round, and then 2007 finalist and second seeded Jared Kamel of UC
Santa Cruz, by a score of 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Chien lost in the second round of the main draw to eventual
finalist Clifford Yook of Chapman, but then went on to win three
consecutive matches in the consolation draw. Zyskind and Wei lost
hard fought first round matches and then reached the semis and
final of the back draw respectively.
CMS’ Lawrence Wang (SR - Orange, CA), was
the top seed in singles and doubles, and reached the quarterfinals
and semifinals of each respective event. Wang and partner
Guillaume Schils (SR - Shaker Heights, OH), were
playing their first tournament together since winning the NCAA
doubles title last May.
