Richards' Three-Homer Day Helps CMS Softball Split at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Lauren Richards hit her third homer of the day, a three-run shot in the top fifth, to help the Claremont-Mudd Scripps softball team capture a 5-3 win over La Verne in the nightcap as the Athenas were able to salvage a road split with the Leopards in a SCIAC doubleheader on Saturday.

With the split, CMS moves to 14-15 on the season and 7-5 in the SCIAC while La Verne, which won the opening game 5-4 despite two homers from Richards, moved to 19-9 on the year and 6-3 in the SCIAC.

Abby Thompson was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Richards was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in the second game, as both Athenas were able to go yard in the nightcap. Kaili Aqui finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Emma Suh was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Emily Nutting added two hits, while Ananya Koneti added one hit. CMS starting pitcher Jade Johnson allowed only three hits over her full seven innings of work and improved to 6-3 on the season.

With CMS down 1-0, Suh singled through to left field and Aqui singled on a bunt, allowing Richards to step to the plate and deliever her third blast of the day to right center, giving CMS a 3-0 lead in the fifth. In the seventh, Aqui singled up the middle and the Athenas were able to take advantage once again after Thompson homered down the left field line to take a 5-2 lead. The Leopards scored one run apiece in the fourth, fifth and seventh but it wasn't enough as CMS was able to hang on for the win, behind the three-hitter from Johnson.

In the opener, Richards was able to record two home runs in a losing effort, including a three-run shot that brought CMS within a single run, as she ultimately finished 5-for-7 with three home runs and 7 RBI on the day. Thompson also added a hit for CMS in the opener.

CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game SCIAC series with Whittier, facing the Poets on the road first on Friday at 3 p.m. and then hosting a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Athena Field.
