CMS Softball Bounces Back to Earn Split With Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Lauren Richards, who threw a no-hitter in a non-conference win over Willamette yesterday, had the game-winning double in the eighth inning of the nightcap today as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team salvaged a split with Occidental in a SCIAC doubleheader.

With the split, CMS now stands at 12-13 on the season and 5-3 in SCIAC while Occidental moved to 8-16 and 1-4 in the SCIAC.

The nightcap saw the Athenas push the Tigers to extra innings before ultimately claiming a 2-1 victory. CMS starting pitcher Heather Shipley threw all eight innings and allowed only three hits while recording two strikeouts. Abby Thompson continued to stay hot with her bat by adding two hits to lead CMS while Richards, Ananya Koneti, Ashleigh Adkins and Kaili Aqui each had one hit for the Athenas.

Adkins singled to center field in the fourth inning, bringing home Sophia Nguyen after she stole a base while pinch-running for Thompson, enabling the Athenas to take a 1-0 lead. Occidental responded right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 1-1. CMS was able to break the tie in the eighth as Koneti singled to right field to start the rally. With two outs, Richards then doubled to left center, bringing pinch-runner Natalie Dale to home plate for what would be the game-winning run, capping a 2-1 win for the Athenas.

The opener saw the Athenas fall behind 2-0 in the first but CMS quickly responded with three runs of their own in the second to take a 3-2 lead. However, the Tigers scored seven runs in the fourth to control a 10-3 advantage only before CMS added three runs in the final three innings of the ball game, suffering a 10-6 defeat.

Lauren Richards was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the opener, Emma Suh finished 2-for-5 with one RBI, Koneti had two RBI and Thompson and Emily Nutting both added two hits apiece for CMS.

CMS closes out its three-game series against Occidental on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Athena Field.
